Importance of Sharing Information on Multiple Platforms
CEO Austin Burris
Technology is how we find out about new information. Word of mouth and letters were the primary sources of information to the public. However, in 2017, with the advancement of technology, there are multiple platforms to be utilized to share news, not to mention the growth of social media. Understanding the progress we have made with technology to be able to share information in multiple ways without even leaving a chair. With new companies developing and entrepreneurs starting new businesses every day, it is important to understand the need to use multiple platforms to share fresh information.
What if the only platform we had to rely on to broadcast news was a phone? Not a cell phone, but a landline. A landline that did not have call waiting or caller ID, so if a call was missed, it was a loss. Imagine having that issue today and you had to get some important news to a business partner, but a phone call from a stakeholder is currently occupying your time. Or perhaps, the only way to share information was through the mail. There would be issues of work being done last minute but had to ensure the letter would be sent and received before the deadline. Fortunately, we do not have to entirely rely on landlines or mail carriers to distribute news. Technology has become so advanced that sharing information is as easy as a click. Even though technology is the easiest way to share news, one cannot forget about the original ways news is being spread.
As stated before, times have not always been this easy to distribute news as efficiently as it is today. Starting out as word of mouth, letters, morse code, telegrams, carrier pigeons, runners, phones, and mail to now newspapers, magazines, billboards, radio, television, email, and the internet being its own entity of sharing. One is now able to share on multiple platforms simply on the web. Over the past ten years, the development of social media has allowed the use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and many more. Furthermore, with the accessible movement of free Wi-Fi everywhere, there is now the option for people to be out and about sharing information via smartphone, tablet, and laptop.
On a regular day, people find information on multiple devices or sources throughout the day with devices like phones and television ranked the highest, followed by laptops, radios, and finally print newspapers, and magazines (How Americans get their news). Social media has arisen abruptly and is not going anywhere any time soon, however, the most popular way news is found out is directly from the organizations; being TV, newspapers, websites and even continuing to receive news word-of-mouth (2014). However, concerning companies, sharing new press releases or information about press conferences, social media along with email could possibly be the best choices. Businesses and marketers utilize social media with numbers in the millions and Facebook is still in the lead in 2016 (Global Social Media Research Summary 2016). The average corporate worker checks their email multiple times a day, which could ultimately be the best option when sharing information one-on-one. Conversely, when trying to get information about being a new company or an entrepreneur without any connections, the best decision could be to broadcast such information on a social media source. In addition to that, social media sites are free and one can post as much as they desire. However, when distributing a message on a larger format such as the TV, radio, billboard, or newspaper, it costs money to utilize those options, but the message will be more direct to specific demographics as well as reach a bigger audience. Nevertheless, the announcement is getting distributed.
Companies will utilize whichever format is beneficial to them, whether it be TV, radio, social media, telephone, or letters. Depending on who the targeted audience often determines the way the company chooses to distribute its news. However, in this technical world, it is extremely useful if companies adopt new ways of sharing their information. Social media is continuing to rise above others in popularity and is almost the most used source for businesses. Internally and externally, for the advancement of companies and entrepreneurs, it is important for them to understand the usefulness of obtaining multiple ways to distribute their information.
